Recent product demonstration during the CES (Consumers Electronic Show), Magic Jack able to place a call from many visitors phone carrying T-mobile and AT&T networks, within 3000-square foot range from the source. The tiny gadget connects successfully to any phone with GSM standard compatibility, but unfortunately, not phones from Sprint or even the young company called Verizon Wireless.

What do you think? People love free stuff, and this should be legal. YEAH! The company CEO testified that this device is legal as it is only for home use, which does not included in the wireless spectrum licenses.

How does it works?

This gadget does not necessarily be totally free, unless you are staying in free internet or WiFi territory. It uses radio frequencies, which the cellphone companies are using and paying for millions. It works like a small signal tower, in your house, that place calls for you without going through your phone carrier’s networks. Just plug your Magic Jack thingy into a PC, with a working broadband Internet connection. The device then detects when a compatible cell phone comes within 8 feet, and places a call to it. The user enters a short code on the phone. The phone is then linked to the magicJack, and as long as it’s within range. Sweet!

YMax’s magicJack is a much smaller, simpler design compared to other device like ‘femtocells‘, which works similarly, only that it mesh with the carrier’s external network as well as offload capacity from carrier’s signal towers. And it costs $200 for this femtocell device to be sold, which is 5 times more expensive than the Jack.

Here is the thing you should know about this growing bigger network company. Travelers who need instant access have more options than ever these days but choices are aren’t always satisfactory. Sometimes, a Wi-Fi hostpot does not come into handy. A mobilebroadband with USB connectivity modem from a major carrier typically requires installing specific program which can be a pain. Also, some gadgets lack USB ports.

Novatel’s wireless Mi-Fi 2200 carries the convenience of Wi-Fi to the ubiquity of mobile broadband, side-stepping all of those issues. It needs no special software to run the wireless connection,meaning, you can connect to it just as you would to any Wi-Fi hotspots and then lets you share an account with family and friends.

The Mi-Fi is a compact Wi-Fi router that derives its Internet access from a single mobile broadband account, instead of DSL or old lame cable. Just simoly turn it on within the range of 3G connectivity signal,and it automatically creates a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five people at a time. But even if you’re flying solo on a plane, its ease of use and support for all Wi-Fi devices make it truly tempting. This is certainly one of my top gadget list of the year!

Mi-Fi does run on its own power source, giving you one more gizmo to recharge at night. At fully charged, it capables of lasting for   about 4 hours,effectively, as advertised. Also,

Novatel states that this modem will ran a lot faster when multiple devices are using it for broadband access.

Sprint Network charges $60 per month for up to 5GB bandwith usage, but doesn’t offer any cheaper option than that, which make  MiFi more suitable for internet addicts than occasional traveling dudes. Verizon also now using MiFi for their broadband subscribers.
